Artist Studio Spaces available

Deadline for application Monday 18th July

Spit & Sawdust studios are new workspaces for contemporary visual artists in Cardiff. To remove any financial pressure to compromise artistic practice, our studios are offered free of charge. We are offering the studio as a space for making and experimenting within a supportive and critical community. Alongside the studios there will be a programme of associated events aimed at sustaining and fostering contemporary visual practice in Cardiff.

We are able to offer free studio spaces to non-commercial artists who are outside of full time education. To qualify for a studio space at Spit & Sawdust you must be a contemporary visual artist in its broadest sense, this includes artists working with sound, video, installation, performance, print, painting, text, sculpture etc. The studios are available to artists who wish to experiment and develop their work. The spaces cannot be used for commercial activities.

In return for a studio space at Spit & Sawdust and access to the associated events and peer support you will be required to contribute your time and skill to the creative programme here. This may include physically helping with installation of exhibitions, painting and maintaining the studios, working on funding applications or other art-related admin in relation to the exhibition programme, arranging artists talks, seminars, events and exhibitions, giving a talk about your own practice or exhibiting your work as part of the programme.

There are currently 5 studio spaces available in a shared room.

The Studios are available via application.

To Apply please send:

A short letter outlining your interest in being part of Spit & Sawdust studios, how it would benefit your practice and what skills and experience you could contribute to the creative programme here (up to 600 words).

An artist CV and biography describing you practice.

Up to 10 images/videos/sound files of your work. Please send them in one PDF, with links to online videos and sound files in the same document. They do not need to be print quality.

Deadline for applications is Midnight Monday 18th July.  Please email the above information to hello@spitandsawdust.co.uk with ‘studio application’ as the subject.

Successful artists will be notified by 22nd July and will need to occupy the studio by the end of July and participate in our open studio event on August 7th.

After this initial call out the application process will be rolling, depending on when studios become available. Information will be on our website.

If you have any questions please contact us on hello@spitandsawdust.co.uk (please note this email address is not checked on Mondays).
