24 hour residency #1
4-5th October 2015
For our first 24 hr Residency we invited artists Jason & Becky, Emma Bennett, Anthony Shapland, Tom Crawford and Nick Davies to spend 24 hours working and experimenting at Spit & Sawdust.
The project was supported by a Research and Development grant from Arts Council Wales to help us work out ways of supporting artists on short scale residencies and seeing how we could open up the whole building, including the skatepark, for artists to explore. For some, taking longer term residencies away from family or work commitments ins’t an option - we wanted to develop something that would be beneficial and supportive to artists within an short time frame.
All night and all day, the artists had complete access to try out new ideas, test and use the whole of the the site - which resulted in an intensive lab of noise making, running, filming, skating, projecting, writing, recording, tunnelling, drawing, wandering, watching, talking and a tiny bit of sleeping.
Throughout there was a social space that was open to visitors, which had screenings and refreshments available.
The residency ended with a party which was open to the public, celebrating the event and offering the opportunity to experience any of the artists’ outcomes.
Following the residency we supported two of the artists to develop their work from the residency further.
Jason and Becky presented Tempus - an interactive projection and sound installation in the skatepark.
Anthony Shapland presented an exhibition of works titled ‘A Crossing Out, an Underlining’, including work made during the 24-hour residency and new work emerging from time spent in the Elan Valley, alongside a film made in Buenos Aires in 2013.
