About Spit & Sawdust

Spit & Sawdust is a multi-aspect community space in Cardiff, which opened in April 2014 with a skate park, café and art programme.

Our cafe mainly serves homemade burgers, chips, sides and breakfast items,  as well as homemade cakes, coffees, teas and shakes. We are fully licensed with a small but high quality wine list, a few draught beers, bottled cider and beers and a few spirit options. We use many local suppliers and make everything in-house. Our cafe serves the users of the skatepark as well as customers who just come to eat and drink here. We also do a number of offsite food stalls and events, as well as private catering work, which can be our regular menu or a range of other dishes. We have an outside wood fired oven which is used for events and private hire.

As well as our cafe Spit & Sawdust houses an indoor skate park. There are various sessions through the week - open sessions, under 10s, female only, lessons, and private hire slots.

Throughout the space we support a programme of events, performances, screenings, exhibitions and residencies giving creative practitioners from all art forms a platform to experiment and present their work. We also host events and private parties, and run community projects in partnership with other organisations.

We’re a not-for-profit social enterprise and a Company Limited by Guarantee. This means all our surplus is put back into the organisation to make the space better.

What does the job involve?

We are a small team at Spit & Sawdust. Currently Becca, Christian and Nia are the Directors and take overall responsibility. Christian is  on-site most of the time, running the skatepark side of things day to day, while Nia and Becca mainly work on admin and the art programme. Marta heads up all thing kitchen and food related, and Kim is the General Manager, making sure everything runs smoothly as well as working front of house. Luther is our Skatepark Assistant, and we also have a number of part-time skateboard tutors, PJ our caretaker, and Emma, our gardener. We also have some regular volunteers, casual staff and freelancers who help out from time to time or work on specific duties such as the art programme.

This opportunity is for someone to work front of house, predominantly on the cafe side of things.

Main duties of the role include:

  • Prepare the bar and front of house ready for service;

  • Keep fridges and all FOH items stocked, ensuring stock rotation;

  • Undertake First Aider and Fire Marshall duties when required and once training course is completed;

  • Take on other duties and and when required, such as occasionally working off-site at events on our food stall or helping out on the skatepark counter.

Who are we looking for?

We try to make Spit & Sawdust a friendly, happy place to work. The above is part of what the staff on shift have to get done every day to make Spit & Sawdust run smoothly, but there is plenty of opportunity to bring your knowledge, experience and interests to the role and input into Spit & Sawdust’s development, events and projects.

GRAB YOUR COPY AT THE SKATE DESK NOW … ONLY A FEW COPIES LEFT

We’ve still got a few copies of Matthew ‘Dykie’ Ryans inspiring book behind the desk, all proceeds go to MIND Charity & THE BEN RAEMERS FOUNDATION.

Heres a little bit from the man himself.

“…Well it is a story of me running round Wales, but that is just a tool in the story; it could be any run really. I have set out a challenge for myself and it just so happens to be that one, and why I want to do it, I guess. Mental health and lockdown has a big part to play in that. It is a story of acceptance of who I am, good or bad. You may laugh, cry, or possibly get inspired to run or pick up a skateboard for the first time. But if it can do what it has done for my mental health to someone else as well, then that will be the biggest accomplishment.”
